What Dricus du Plessis can teach you about dating and mindset
There was a huge UFC fight last night - Dricus du Plessis defended his title against the legendary Israel Adesanya.
If you listened to 90% of the pundits and YouTubers, they all said the same thing:
- Adesanya will beat Dricus by knockout.
- Adesanya will outclass Dricus.
- Adesanya will secure the win.
Stylistically, Adesanya appeared to have the advantage over Dricus. Dricus is described as sloppy, with his chin exposed, while Adesanya is seen as a sharpshooter capable of delivering a knockout in an instant, as he did with Alex Pereira.
And yet, the match turned out to be close.
Round one seemed to favor Dricus. Round two clearly went to Dricus. Round three was Adesanya's. In Round four, it looked like Adesanya was on track to reclaim his title when suddenly, Dricus landed a flurry of punches that sent him to the ground and executed a smooth submission.
Was it luck?
Did Adesanya just have an off night?
Adesanya appeared to be in peak form. He looked motivated and well-rested after taking 11 months off.
What truly made the difference was Dricus du Plessis' mindset.
Dricus had every reason to be complacent in this fight.
- Adesanya had a record of 1 win in his last three fights.
- Adesanya has been dealing with a mental battle since his last loss.
- Adesanya is also five years older.
However, if you listened to Dricus speak about his preparation this week, a consistent theme was present:
“I’m training for the best version of Adesanya.”
“To beat Adesanya, I have to be perfect.”
Most champs emphasize that they are defending their title. Dricus, during a press conference, stated that as soon as he enters the ring, he is defending nothing; the officials take away his belt.
This perspective reflects a very humbling mindset for a champion.
What can this teach you?
Expect the unexpected: Dricus trained for the absolute best version of Adesanya, even when many expected that his best version might not show up.
Preparation is key: Dricus emphasized that he needed to be perfect to have a chance against Adesanya.
Adopt a grounded mindset: Dricus mentioned how, once he steps into the ring, the officials take away his belt. It is no longer his until he wins the fight. Approach every situation with the mindset that what you desire must be fought for and earned. Do not anticipate easy victories or entitlements.
Life is random.
It’s a superpower if you’ve prepared extensively, kept your expectations grounded, and are open to the possibility of uncertainty.
This is all true especially when it comes to dating.
You cannot be completely secure in the idea that a woman will always desire you, even if she becomes your girlfriend or marries you. That’s why you always have to work on the relationship.
When dating a girl, always come prepared. Have your grooming on point. Have your outfit looking spotless. Don’t think you’re in a position to show up looking like crap especially early on in dating a girl.
Even if a girl is texting you, making future plans with you, and showing that she really likes you - don’t mistake this for a guarantee of her commitment. She’s showing high interest in you which is great. But you need to keep her on her toes. Do not get lazy. Stay emotionally disciplined.
